Watch for the Hour

You know not the day nor the hour—that’s what I’ve heard you warn us.  In your parables, Lord, the bridegroom always arrives when everyone’s asleep.  And the master decides to stay at a nearby village until nightfall and then on a whim rushes home to wake the servants in the dead of the night.

Lord, I don’t want to fall asleep!  I want to wait for you, to keep my house ready for you to enter, keep it clean and worthy of you.

Come into my home—I will receive you.  Don’t pass me by!  I know you have no place to lay your head, but please, just this once, come and rest.  I will keep vigil for your coming and my spirit will not sleep.  My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast.  I will sing and make melody.  Awake, my soul! (Psalm 57:7-8)

I have prayed for your coming as you entered our city, the gates of Jerusalem exalting before their king.  I know I am unworthy, but you eat with sinners and are not ashamed of my weakness.  So I dare to repeat once and again: Stay with me, Lord!  Do not pass me by!

In this your hour, this moment of supreme night, this darkness and sorrow you’ve so often foretold, everyone is turning against you.  But my heart will be for you a secure place, a place where you can rest and gather strength for the coming storm.  My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast.  I will watch for you during the night.

But what’s this?  A knock at my door.  I rush down the stairs, open it, and meet two men who say to me, The Teacher says, “My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.” (Matthew 26:18)

As I live out my consecration to God and preparation for the priesthood, I am convinced in the power of the 'way of beauty' mentioned by Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium n. 167. To learn to see beauty as an expression of God in all things helps us to fall deeper in love with him. And there is no better way to give the faith than inviting others to experience its beauty.
